The Movie

Twenty-five hundred years ago, Cyrus the Great, a leader of wisdom and virtue and enduring influence, created the Persian Empire, conquered Babylon, freed the Jews from captivity, formulated mankind’s first human rights charter, ruled over those he conquered with respect and benevolence, and changed the course of world history. A fast-paced drama of the life of Cyrus the Great that begins when he is kidnapped at birth because of prophecy, and left to die in the wilderness. The beginnings of a heroic warrior destined to become the founder of an empire that would stretch from Africa and Egypt to India. In the tradition of films like Braveheart, Gladiator, Ben-Hur, and the Ten Commandments, Cyrus the Great is an epic retelling of one of the most extraordinary men who ever lived.

Why A Historical Epic Movie

Definition: Epics-Historical Films often take a historical or imagined event, mythic, legendary, or heroic figure, and add an extravagant setting and lavish costumes, accompanied by grandeur and spectacle and a sweeping musical score.

Epic: Rise of a Genre

The epic film is back. The Economist talks to Andrew Elliott, a senior lecturer at the University of Lincoln and the author of a book on the topic.

The epic film is back. Recently, “300: Rise Of An Empire” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” have been released, and “Hercules”, starring Dwayne Johnson, and Ridley Scott’s “Exodus”, featuring Christian Bale as Moses. With Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Pompeii” erupting in British cinemas, it seems that Hollywood is once again obsessed by spectacular reconstructions of the ancient or mythical past, where muscle-bound men perform heroic deeds while wearing loincloths and sandals.

Edinburgh University Press has just published a book on the subject, “The Return of The Epic Film: Genre, Aesthetics and History in the 21st Century”. Before the use of computer generated graphics to take audiences back to ancient worlds, Hollywood would build massive sets and employ a literal cast of thousands. Fearful of the new medium of television, studios staged these spectacular films to draw audiences to theaters. It worked for a time, but by the 1990s these epics proved too costly to make and be profitable.

Today, with new technologies such as special effects and computer-generated animation, historical epic movies can be made cost effective. Exodus: Gods and Kings is a 2014 adventure, history movie directed by Ridley Scott. The film stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro, Aaron Paul and has an estimated budget of $140 million. The film released in theaters and grossed over $268 million worldwide (stats).

Plot: The defiant leader Moses revolts against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses, setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

Competition

The major studios do not make many epic historical movies. Therefore, there is not much competition in this genre. Our movie Cyrus is very unique. It is based on a true story. It has a strong message (Human Rights Charter), adventure (three major battles), historical events (release of Jews from Babylon) love story and sex (scenes in Babylon the sin-city).

Larry Hedrick

Larry Hedrick

Editor of Cyrus the Great: The Arts of Leadership and War (Xenophon the Historian)

Xenophon’s masterpiece The Education of Cyrus--a work admired by Machiavelli for its lessons on leadership–is at last available in a new English translation for a new century. Also known as the Cyropaedia, this philosophical novel is loosely based on the accomplishments of Cyrus the Great, founder of the vast Persian Empire that later became the archrival of the Greeks in the classical age. It offers an extraordinary portrait of political ambition, talent, and their ultimate limits.

The writings of Xenophon are increasingly recognized as important works of political philosophy. In The Education of Cyrus, Xenophon confronts the vexing problem of political instability by exploring the character and behavior of the ruler. Impressive though his successes are, however, Cyrus is also examined in the larger human context, in which love, honor, greed, revenge, folly, piety, and the search for wisdom all have important parts to play.

Davood Roostaei

Davood Roostaei

Founder of "Cryptorealism"

The eccentric and internationally known artist Davood Roostaei, is the founder of Cryptorealism“. Roostaei is by all definition, a classical case of a talented painter that seems to have found his path by illustrating his intentions and visions through multiple cryptic images, interweaved in even more mystery by changing the perspective. He is a painter of unusual intensity of expression – invariably filled with profound inspiration and commitment to the cause of mankind which provides his work with humane dimension, that has become rare in contemporary art. He is a universal artist who, metaphorically, paints with the blood of his heart. A challenging and charismatic painter who has intuitively developed individualistic painting concept “Cryptorealism”.
