Chapter 16 (Sample)

Harpagus spoke with certainty, making sure the young prince understood his words well. Spaco sat down beside Cyrus and took his hand. Cyrus nodded at Harpagus to begin.

“Before you were born, King Astyages had a dream, a prophecy that his grandson would destroy his kingdom and end his rule. To thwart the prophecy, he ordered the child swapped with a stillborn baby, and ordered me to take his grandson into the countryside and leave it to die.”

Spaco tightened her grip on Cyrus’ hand and looked gratefully at Harpagus.

“Instead, he brought you to us.”

Harpagus nodded.

“I owe you my life,” Cyrus said.

“You owe me nothing.”
